What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a means of improving the movements of the muscles, joints and limbs. It is based on scientific foundations and provides support for traditional medical methods of treatment. Physiotherapy is a diverse discipline and can subsequently be used to treat a vast range of conditions. It is defined by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy as,

“Physical approaches to promote, maintain and restore physical, psychological and social well-being, taking account of variations in health status. Physiotherapy is science-based, committed to extending, applying, evaluating and reviewing the evidence that underpins and informs its practice and delivery. The exercise of clinical judgement and informed interpretation is at its core.”

Physiotherapy Treatments

Your personal physiotherapist will ask about your activities that led to your injury and conduct a thorough evaluation to find the actual cause of your condition. Your therapist will then develop a plan of care to address your needs and goals. Physiotherapy treatments may include:

Cold Therapy or Cryotherapy

Cold therapy is effective in minimizing pain and swelling, especially in acute (immediate) injuries. It may also be used just after deep kneading massage (DKM). Examples of cold therapy are ice pack application and ice massage.

TENS

TENS, or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, is a type of electrical stimulation. It is a small battery-powered device that sends low current through the electrodes place on the skin surface. A TENS device does not cause the muscles to contract, but rather helps temporarily relieve pain.
